The days will be in the mid to upper 80s this week… so, fishing early and late will be the best game-plan. Local lakes and timberline lakes offer some relief from the super-hot weather. Fun hikes and fishing abound for mountain lake brookies and cutthroat. Local streams are skinny and on the warm side, but deeper holes offer some great dry fly fishing for smaller trout. Larger rivers are the best bet right now for trout and smallmouth. The big lake is a playground, and lake traffic has decreased as the kiddos get ready to go back to school. The time to start thinking fall is now, so gear up! Current Conditions Lake Pend Oreille - The dog days of summer persist. Bass fishing is persisting and you can find fish at most depths. Craw patterns like a sweet baby cray or RJ’s jiggy worm will get the best looks. Check out Denton Slough ...

    Coeur d'Alene Fishing Report 08.29.19

Here we've come into the beginning of the end of summer.  Nights are getting cooler, water temperatures are cooling off as a result.  Fishing has improved on all of our local streams and should just get better for the next couple of months.  My favorite four weeks of the year are the last two of September and the first two of October.  Elk hunting is imminent as well as school and all of the tourists are headed back home.  So, typically the streams are far less crowded this time of year.  Don't let these awesome two months slip through your fingers before winter. Current Conditions Coeur d'Alene River  - The river has cooled off quite a bit.  It is low but still fishing really well.  The hopper and terrestrial fishing are really good now.  The fish are keen on eating a medium or small hopper.  Hate to beat a dead horse, b...

    Sandpoint Idaho Fishing Report 08.22.19

We have another warmup forecasted this week. Hit the water early and late. Mid-day can be a good time to chill streamside for an afternoon siesta or quick tying session, getting ready for the evening hatch. Lakes are predominantly a bass fishing game, trout will be deep, especially during the daytime hours. Tourist traffic is waning as kids head back to school. Shorter nights will mean cooler temperatures in the evenings in the upcoming months. Stay strong through the hot weather – it won’t be long now. Current Conditions Lake Pend Oreille - The dog days of summer persist. Bass fishing is persisting and you can find fish at most depths. Craw patterns like a sweet baby cray or RJ’s jiggy worm will get the best looks. Check out Denton Slough for largemouth bass and pike. Topwater can be effective early and late and on shaded wee...

    Coeur d'Alene Fishing Report 08.22.19

The kids are getting ready for school and Labor Day is coming up. Everyone is trying to cram in their last few family weekends.  Nights are getting much cooler, days are getting shorter. Fall is on its way and this means some of the best fishing of the year is coming.  The fishing is very good right now. It can be a difficult decision now on where to go.  Usually, the crowds start tapering off here in a couple of weeks as the tourist start to head home and the rivers are far more peaceful.  There are lots of good hatches now and the hopper fishing on our rivers is going off in a good way.  We have had, in my mind one, of the better weather summers in recent history.  Temperatures hardly hit the 90s, and there were very few fires.  There has also been good rain throughout the summer too.  Hopefully, we get a bit more this fall ...

    Sandpoint Idaho Fishing Report 08.15.19

The extended forecast is showing things heating back up to the mid/upper 70s and lower 80s during the upcoming days. We’ll see overnight temperatures hovering around the low 50s, so early morning and late evening fishing will remain best, with slower periods during the day. Trout fishing will take you away from the Sandpoint area, everything is either too warm or just too skinny. However, the Big Lake is a giant playground for smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, pike, walleye, and more! Current Conditions Lake Pend Oreille - We will see a slow decrease of boat traffic over the next few weeks as the kids get ready to go back to school. However, shorter days and cooler overnight temperatures will bring fish towards shallower waters early and late in the day. Smallmouth are everywhere right now, so focus on docks and submerged structur...

Looks like my rain dance worked!  What a blessing to get some really good rain in August.  It's been a  long time since we've had this kind of rain in the middle of summer.  Hopefully, it helped quell some fires, and it for sure helped the water temperatures on our rivers.  We fished Sunday on the St. Joe and had a great time in the rain -nothing a little Goretex can’t solve. Looks as if we are going to be back in the mid-'80s for the foreseeable future.  It will at least be a bit cooler than it typically is in August.  We’re long overdue for a temperate summer like this.  It's been awesome, to say the least.  Hopefully, we get a few more of these types of storms from here on into the fall.  It will do nothing but good for fishing. September is right around the corner and this is our favorite time of the year.  Not only ...

    Coeur d'Alene Fishing Report 08.08.19

Up, up and up the temp has climbed in the last week.  Solid 90's and close to 100 degree temps for the next few days.  However, there is a good possibility of a storm coming in later this week to the weekend.  Hopefully, no major lightning comes with this and also good rain. The forecast shows rain and mid 60's for Sunday.  This is a really good thing if we get this.  The fishing should be killer if it happens.  The forests are very dry and high probability of fires now.  Please, please be responsible out there.  We have had a really tough last few summers with fires.  Also, we need to be respectful of our fish in these higher temps.  Consider getting up early, fishing the early am with cooler temps and also the last couple hours of the day.  The middle of the day fishing will be detrimental to the fishes chances at recov...

    Sandpoint Idaho Fishing Report 07.04.19

Not much has changed, but the fishing is staying consistent out on the big lake and a few streams in the area. The July 4th week and weekend will bring some pressure to the area and the weather will be prime to get out and explore some lesser-known waters. Current Conditions Lake Pend Oreille - The big lake is steadily fishing for quite a few species. Bass are an easy target on the fly. Backwaters off sloughs and bays can produce some great largemouth bass action, especially on topwater. Deer hair bass bugs and poppers will do the trick. Stay weedless if possible, it makes things less frustrating.  Sink tips are something good to have now. As for flies, sticking to your baitfish patterns like Clouser Minnows, Murdich Minnows, and Lowfat Minnows and craw patterns like Creek Crawlers, Bassmasters, and Grim Reapers will do the trick. ...

Nothing short of greatness in our area!  There are so many good reports from all of our fisheries of late.  Now is really a tough time to decide where to go.  Everything is in shape and good to go. Whether wading or floating is your gig, there are tons of options right now.  It’s looking like warmer temperatures are coming up this week in the high 70s and low 80s. This is perfect weather for the week of the 4th!  Our town is bustling with energy and people looking to go fishing.  The shop has been very busy with lots of happy fishermen and women.  Hope you guys and gals have a great week on the river with your families and enjoy the 4th! Current Conditions Coeur d'Alene River  - The fishing here has been solid.  Big fish are still being caught but you'll need to bring your A-game with the lower water conditions now.  The...

    Coeur d'Alene Fishing Report 06.27.19

June has been a fantastic month for fishing here in North Idaho.  We've had plenty of water and all the local streams are in great shape.  The occasional rain has spruced things up along the way and keeping the water nice and cool.  Looks like we are in for a bit more rain come Thursday and back into the hot stuff the following week.  No 90's yet but high 70's and 80's, so ideal in my book. Hatches have been getting stronger.  Lots of Pale morning duns and caddis as per usual.  The St. Joe is still not quite at normal summer flows but this is a good thing.  Having extra water for the summer is what we look for.  The Clark fork is finally in shape and giving it up big time.  Things are shaping up for a killer summer.  Hopefully, we don't get too hot and we keep getting some rain here and there.  Pick your poison now, so much ...

    Sandpoint Idaho Fishing Report 06.27.19

The weather has been a little off with rain, wind, and a bit chilly at times. Trout fishing has remained steady on certain waters with great hatches of BWO’s, PMD’s, and Caddis. Green drakes have been popping on some local streams as well, offering for some fun dry fly action. Larger rivers and streams are coming down and are fishable, small cricks are dropping like a rock, so get it while it’s good. Lake fishing is still great, but look for some changes in tactics as fish transition with the flux in water temperatures. In the right spot and right setup, Pike, Bass, and Walleye can all be caught on the fly this time of year, making for a lot of fun opportunities when trout fishing slows down locally. Current Conditions Lake Pend Oreille - The big lake is steadily fishing for quite a few species. Bass are an easy target on the ...

    Sandpoint Idaho Fishing Report 06.20.19

The weather throughout the weekend looks like a toss-up, but trust me, it can potentially make things great. Cooler temperatures and precipitation will help a lot of bugs pop on local waters. Hatches of bwos, pmds, and caddis before and after each passing front should be happening this week and weekend. The cool weather will stall the water temperatures from rising too quickly as well, so we can expect a small extension of the cooler flows. When it comes to the lakes in the region, the overcast days ahead will improve activity around structure as fish loosen their grip on shaded areas. Bass are locked in spawn, but you can pull lots of smallmouth off the docks and structure on the shorelines of Lake Pend Oreille and the Pend Oreille River. Pike and largies are in the bays and sloughs. There are options everywhere right now. Current Con...
